Helping World Vets reduce pet overpopulation in Ecuador - March 2011

This spring, Blue Hummel and I are going to Ecuador to participate in a World Vets spay/neuter project. We'll work with vets, staff, and volunteers from around the USA to help people in Ecuador provide medical care to their beloved pets. This is our story - and I'm sticking to it!

Bright and beautiful this a.m.! There were very few clouds in the sky. The view from our room and anywhere on the hotel property is gorgeous. Took a little walk and snapped a few photos. It was actually fairly warm, especially in the sunshine.
We had a nice breakfast: rolls, cheese, scrambled eggs and wonderful fresh fruit juice. I have no idea what kinds of fruit, but mighty tasty!
We loaded on the bus to head back down the mountain. Several folks were saying how scary the ride up was, the road is steep and narrow along a steep cliff. So I asked to sit up front and enjoy it! It was pretty nice! Not scary.
First we stopped at the building where the clinics will be. There was a presentation being held. The Prefecto (sp?), which is higher than a mayor, donated supplies to help with animal welfare. There were TV stations and newspaper reporters covering the event. World Vets got a special thank you. It was followed by a champagne toast. Pretty nice. We got to meet the local vet, David, who does lots of animal welfare work in the country. It is his building we will be using.
Karen, Allen and rescue group volunteers stayed at the sight to set up for clinics. We start tomorrow. The rest of us jumped on the bus to go to the outdoor market…. To spend money!! I did well… bought some cool pants, poncho/scarves, a shirt and a jacket. Oh, and Woofie got a new “collar”! It was fun haggling with the sellers, but the prices were already so low, that I kind of felt bad about quibbling over a dollar or two… but did it anyway!
Then we walked up the road for another nice meal. I had a starter of Avocado Chicken. It was a huge avocado filled with shredded chicken and covered with a Thousand Island type dressing. Oh sooooo good! The avocados here are so good. They are very large and smooth and “buttery”. Many of the meals come with slices of avocado, so I am getting plenty!! Linda would be going nuts! Then I had a meal of beef steak, fries and a little veggie mix. Also very good. They also served the sauce similar to the sauce we had last night. It is so yummy, I was topping it on everything!
Then off we went in search of ice cream and several of the others wanted wines. The liquor store was closed, so they had the bus driver take them as we were returning to the hotel. We went back to the clinic to pick up the rest of the group. While we waited for them, we wandered a bit in the area. I took some pictures of the local houses and buildings. ALL of the windows and doors on the ground level are covered with bars or have pull down metal doors. If there is a yard or patio, the fences have some topping to prevent people from climbing over: sharp metal spikes, barbed wire or broken glass! There is a lot of graffiti, broken sidewalks and moderate litter. It is not very nice.
