Helping World Vets reduce pet overpopulation in Ecuador - March 2011
This spring, Blue Hummel and I are going to Ecuador to participate in a World Vets spay/neuter project. We'll work with vets, staff, and volunteers from around the USA to help people in Ecuador provide medical care to their beloved pets. This is our story - and I'm sticking to it!

Another busy clinic day! There were lots of people waiting again by the time we got there. There were lots of very cute animals on leashes, in owner’s arms, in boxes, in baskets, wrapped in blankets and jackets. Some animals even had little sweaters on! The owners act very happy to have their picture taken with their pet. Karen set up another surgery station in the induction room so she could do surgery. One of our tables was fairly wide, so Carol and Sue each did an animal on that table at the same time, usually cats, occasionally a small dog. I was given most of the big dogs today, one was an 89# pit/rott cross that had a venereal tumor. I had to take many samples from her for a research project being done in Europe. I also had a 120# St Bernard!! Most of the dogs were in heat or pregnant. Many of the cats were pregnant. Population control is our mission here, lots of future animals won’t be breeding and adding to the overpopulation in this country. Karen made it a point to let me know how wonderful Blue has been as a team member and Karen is so happy that Blue came along. She is welcome back anytime! Yep, we knew she was good! Carolyn, the lady in charge of induction, was adamant that members float and work in different areas, BUT she wanted Blue to stay in induction because she is so awesome! David, the Ecuadorian veterinarian also did some surgeries today. I helped him when he dropped the uterine stump in a cat. I think he has really improved his technique getting to work with us. He is so nice, letting us use his building for this event. We did 68 animals today. We were finished with surgery about 3:30! A lot earlier than yesterday. I hope we have another busy day tomorrow! We are running low on some supplies, so hopefully that won’t interfere with getting all the animals taken care of. Today was Jessica’s 21st birthday! We all gathered for dinner together. Carolyn brought a wonderful cake for everybody to share. Many had shots of tequila or vodka. We had a fun evening. I felt it was getting pretty late, so I started to leave… it was only 8:30! I think many people are calling it a night fairly early… many of us were pretty pooped today! Friday we have a free day. We have not decided what we want to do… ride horses, go parasailing, hike or do more surgery! Well, hopefully I can get this blog off to Linda and get some pictures sent. Hasta manana!!
